Gore Blimey Half Term Fun @Bristol

Celebrate Halloween this half term with At-Bristol’s ‘Gore Blimey’ activities! Between the 22 and 31 of October, At-Bristol science centre will be giving you the chance to get hands-on with a range of activities including organ dissection and making your own fake blood!

Forget about the supernatural this Halloween and get to the heart of organ anatomy and what really makes us so fascinating! Dissect and compare how your eye matches up to a horses’s, find out how much blood pumps through a heart and bring science to life (literally!) in our dissection lab by dissecting and reanimating a sheep’s lung!

Ever wondered how blood clots form? Find out as the At-Bristol team provides you with the tools to create your very own fake blood…which you can take home! And for the more squeamish of visitors, there’s a less gory way to learn about our anatomy – by painting the anatomy on you! Paint on veins, muscles and tissues – body-painting with a difference.

Commenting on At-Bristol’s blood-curdling half-term activities, Katy Nehammer, Informal Learning Manager for At-Bristol said: “Gore Blimey is a great way for children to experience anatomy and organs in practice, rather than in a text book. A lot of parents might not have done dissection since school, I think the whole family might be a little surprised by what they discover, even more so by what they take away!”

At Bristol Celebrates the Year of Flight

At-Bristol is launching its new family show, Altitude – the fantastic flight show, this week to celebrate the BAC’s (Bristol Aeroplane Company) 100 years of flight in the West and has secured sponsorship for it from AgustaWestland, the Anglo-Italian helicopter company based in Yeovil, Somerset.

The show is interactive with audience members being shown all about the science of flight. How does something as heavy as an aeroplane or a helicopter manage to stay in the sky? Would you know how to fly a plane if you found yourself in the cockpit? With a wind turbine, smoke machine, small aeroplane and explosive experiments, this is a show with something for everyone.

More discoveries can be also made at the Take Off in the Live Science zone. Fix a ‘wing’ to your hand and see what differences it makes, drop different weights down a tube to see what happens and look at feathers under microscopes and learn how amazing flight really is.

Altitude – the fantastic flight show and Take Off are included as part of the ticket to At-Bristol and will be running for the next six months.

There are also other ways to get involved with the BAC’s 100 years of flight in Jet set, go! an airport-style play area for under 8s where children can fly a plane, be air traffic controllers, put luggage through the x-ray machines or be an air steward. There’s also Launch It, an exhibit that allows visitors to discover the science behind flight by building rockets, launching them up to the ceiling and watching as they come back down, a hot-air balloon you can make rise by getting it to the correct temperature and also some actual landing gear from an A330 Airbus where visitors can learn how it works, its components and the sheer size of what is only a relatively small part of the plane.

At-Bristol would like to say a huge thank you to AgustaWestland for their sponsorship of Altitude – the fantastic flight show. As a charity, At-Bristol needs funding to allow for the development of shows and exhibitions and the money for this show has gone towards buying equipment that otherwise wouldn’t have been able to be purchased resulting in being able to offer visitors a much better, and exciting, visit.

At-Bristol Gets Top Marks for Educational Visits

At-Bristol has shown itself to be at the top of the class for educational visits by being awarded a Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.

Awarded by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, the Quality Badge combines for the first time learning and safety into one easily recognisable badge for all organisations providing learning outside the classroom experiences.

Chris O’Callaghan, Learning Manager for At-Bristol, said: “Being awarded the Quality Badge is a real coup for all the staff here as it shows that we offer young people the type of high quality learning experiences they really benefit from. We’re thrilled to get official recognition for our efforts and we look forward to welcoming even more children and young people from to At-Bristol!

The Quality Badge was developed as part of the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, a national initiative to ensure young people are given more opportunities to have these experiences as part of the curriculum. The Quality Badge scheme is part of the Government’s £4.5m Out and About package which, along with the badges, provides guidance and information for teachers on how to plan and organise high quality activities. The badge is designed to make it easier for teachers to identify providers of quality educational visits. Organisations will display the badge as a signal to schools that their venue has met required standards, so teachers do not need to carry out their own risk or quality assessments.

Ed Balls, Secretary of State Children, Schools and Families, said: “Educational visits are among the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life. Quality Badges offer teachers a guarantee that not only is a venue providing the sort of educational value that they can build on in class long after the visit but they also have the appropriate risk management structures in place.

It is a significant victory in our battle to move away from the misguided perception that learning outside the classroom is a potential minefield for teachers. I want to see teachers using Quality Badges as practical decision making tool. It should ensure that many more young people have memorable, exciting and valuable learning outside the classroom experiences. I congratulate At-Bristol on being awarded the badge.
