Christmas at Thurleigh Farm Centre – Days Out Bedfordshire

December is always a magical time at the farm. Not only does your visit include a tractor and ‘Sleigh’ ride through the decorated woods, but you also travel on General Shirley taking a miniature train ride through Santa’s Toyland Tunnel. You will still have time to meet some of their animals, possibly cuddle a bunny in the Winter Wonderland and marvel at the live reindeer. Your group will then be taken to warm their toes in Santa’s log cabin home and there you can spend considerable time regaling him with stories as to what is on children’s Christmas lists and perhaps singing the odd Christmas carol from your school production. This is the fun part with lots of excited visitors and presents for all!

Group visits must be pre-booked and to be eligible you must have 15+ walking children. Admission prices for Christmas are £7.00 per child and £4.50 per adult (weekdays non school holidays) and £6.00 per adult (Christmas school holidays) with 1 adult free for every 4 paying children. Children not yet walking are free but we do charge £3.00 should they wish to receive a gift from Santa.

“Will” and “Kate” go Free at London Zoo

As the elite and famous get ready for the Royal Wedding this week, ZSL is announcing its own special invitation. Anyone with the name ‘Will’ or ‘Kate’ is invited to a free day out at ZSL London Zoo or ZSL Whipsnade Zoo to celebrate the Royal Wedding.

This weekend from Friday 29 April to Monday 2 May, those lucky enough to share their first name with Prince William or his blushing bride-to-be, Kate, can enjoy a free day out at the Zoo to mark the royal occasion.

Royal namesakes should head to ZSL London Zoo to mark the regal occasion with a day out with the animals, including the impressive Asian lions and rather majestic giraffes.

Over at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Wills and Kates can take a ride on the Jumbo Express, watch the Sealions splash about in their pool and make sure to pay a visit to the herd of Asian elephants to watch them play in their paddock at the 600-acre zoo.

If your name is Will or Kate (or William, or Catherine, or Wills, or Cat…) then bring your passport along to ZSL London or Whipsnade Zoo on the Royal Wedding weekend and enjoy a great day out for free.

Museums at Night 14th-16th May 2010

‘Museums at Night’ is a national campaign, led by Culture24, and funded by MLA and the National Museum Directors’ Conference (NMDC), to showcase the unique and vibrant museums, galleries, heritage sites, libraries and archives in the UK. Running over the weekend of Friday 14th May to Sunday 16th May, museums and galleries alike will aim to inspire fresh discovery by opening their doors to late night visitors.

Museums will be unrolling an imaginative array of activities across the country. From candle-lit readings, paranormal investigations, sleepovers, night-time tours, musical events and much, much more.

This year’s programme sees the return of firm favourites, like Cabinet War Rooms sleepover and the Old Operating Theatre at St Thomas Church, plus exciting new additions such as the; Helicopter Museum’s ‘Back to the Blitz’ experience, follow a night shift at Cornwall’s Geevor Tin Mine and the chance to see a ‘Light in the Night’ at Cromer’s Lifeboat Museum.

New Baby Elephant at Whipsnade Zoo

He’s heavy and he’s leggy, he’s the new elephant calf at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo – kicking off the spring season at the Bedfordshire zoo – and he has been named Crooked.

The lanky youngster, who is now 12 days old, is amusing his keepers by squeezing under new mum Karishma to reach his milk, but he is already showing a determined streak.

The baby Asian elephant was given his nickname because of a bend in his tail. The youngster is more than 3ft tall and weighs a healthy 124kg (almost 20 stone).

First-time mother Karishma, age 12, wowed her keepers with her calmness at the overnight birth, which they watched on monitors from a safe distance away. Deputy team leader Andy Durham, who has known Karishma since she was a baby, said: “She surprised us all and was excellent from the word ‘go’. When the calf first came out she just seemed amazed to have her own baby. She’s fantastic with it.”

Crooked has spent his early days getting to know the other elephants in the herd, including half sister Donna who is nine-months-old, while enjoying the Spring sunshine in the seven-acre elephant paddock.
